Annette studied extensively with local, national and International teachers. Since 1999, she had the privilege of frequently studying under world-renowned Spanish artists in Spain in the cities of Madrid, Seville and Jerez de la Frontera (a city known as the “cradle of Flamenco”). She studied with such masters as Matilde Coral, Milagro Menjibar, Rafael Campallo, Eva La Yerbabuena, Manolo Marin, la Tati, Ana Maria Lopez, Maria Magdalena, Maria Bermudez, and Enrique Pantoja. Annette had made Spain her home in 2001 where she immersed herself in intensive studies of the art of Flamenco. She returns to Spain on a yearly basis to further her knowledge of the art. Her interest in Flamenco is not limited to dance. Annette has studied Flamenco singing since 1996 with such teachers as Oscar Nieto, Carmen de la Torre in Seville, Juan Rodriquez in Madrid, Melchora Ortega in Jerez and Jesús Corbacho Vasquez in Seville. Her grasp of the techniques for singing Flamenco is facilitated by her knowledge of the Middle Eastern style of song and through her Mediterranean upbringing. In her youth, Annette also sang in several school choirs. As a performer, Annette was a member of the Flamenco trio “Ocurrencia”. The group performed extensively during the span of two years at various public and private functions and was featured by the Calgary Guitar Society in their year 2000 concert series. She also performed with Peter Knight, a Calgary recording artist, and his Fuego Flamenco Ensemble at private and public functions including a performance at the Betty Mitchell Concert Hall and at the 2002 Canada Day Celebrations.
Annette’s performance has been described as passionately raw and true to the tradition of the Flamenco “aire”. Annette strives to bring out the essence of this unique art and its cultural ideals in her performance and through her teaching as the director of Fineza Flamenca Dance and as an instructor at such prestigious organizations as Free House Dance . Apart from her credentials as a dancer and singer, she played the Clarinet in high school and reached grade 8 level in Piano. Annette holds an undergraduate degree in Sciences and a Master degree in Business, both from the University of Calgary.
